March marks the start of Make a Will Month, a charity-led fundraising initiative designed to encourage people to write or update their Wills while supporting good causes.
During March 2026, solicitors and Will writers working with participating charities will offer Will-writing services with waived fees.
The model is simple:
- Participating solicitors waive their usual fees, so 100% of all donations go to the charity.
- Individuals can have a simple Will drawn up for a suggested donation towards the charity, which is less than half the cost of a standard fee.
- Participants also have the option, but are never obliged, to leave a gift to one or more participating charities.
This year, the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust is taking part to encourage more people to ensure their affairs are in order and their Wills are up to date. In the UK, around 56% of adults aged 18 and over do not have a Will, meaning more than half of the adult population hasn’t made one.
Why Having a Will is Important
Many people assume they don’t have enough assets to make a Will, while others believe their wishes will be respected even without a legal document.
A Will is a crucial legal document. If it is not properly written, signed, and witnessed, it can become legally invalid, which can create unnecessary complications for your loved ones.
Reasons to Make a Will
- You have children who depend on you financially.
- Guardianship: Ensuring your children stay with the people you choose.
- You are married or planning to remarry – your existing Will may become void.
- You want to leave something to someone outside your immediate family.
- A Will can help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate.
- A Will makes it easier for your family and friends to manage your affairs when you pass away.
- Without a Will, your assets are distributed according to standard legal rules, not necessarily according to your wishes.
- If you are cohabiting and have children, the law still treats you as single; your partner may not inherit anything without a Will.
